Cache
The Viewer cache is a process of storing in the RAM what you're looking at, so that if you go back to exactly that later you will have increased responsiveness, instead of having to go read the image on the disk again.

A layer, in Nuke or in an OpenEXR file for example, is an image within that file. We can have multiple images in the same file, or on the same frame in Nuke, which we call layers. They are basically perfectly independent images, only stored in the same file or same frame number.
